I spent the last five years in the southwest and each year when I return home from school break, I revive myself back to my roots. To be with where my stomping ground is, I am reminded of where my blood comes from and my purpose for getting an education at the Insitute of American Indian Arts (IAIA). After high school graduation, I went to college right in the following fall semester and at first, I wanted to leave the rez and explore the opportunities, but after a while, the absence of home, made me long to drop out and go back. But of course, my family supported me through every step of the way in this journey and would most likely never let me stray or forget my goals and dreams. I was told before I chose to major in studio arts, that it would be a hard life and that it would be hard to make a living. Yet, my spirit has a passion for art and the beauty my creations make, I tend to help represent my family and my community in the best way possible. I am also reviving not only my spirit every time I come back home from being away so long but reviving our society to who our ancestors were and their prayers for us as the 7th generation and more to come. We are the next leaders to carry on our knowledge passed down from generation to generation. We are the next teachers to help teach our culture, traditions, and language, because every day we go without speaking the language, we lose a day to get closer back to our sovereignty.
