Whisper Crow Dog

5" x 6 1/2" in.
Screenprint (3/6)
My great-great-grandfather, Crow Dog had a vision of our family emblem; the original Crow Dog emblem was two blue circles vertically aligned, and two red arrows were opposite from each other, starting from between the circles and facing away. I was told that Crow Dog was shot with two bullets and two arrows, for that this is where the family emblem comes from. The colors represent the Burnt Thigh Nation people because it is said, the women only used two ribbons on their skirts – one red and one blue – and the men also wore the two colors, even their tipis were painted with two rings of red and blue. I also want these colors to represent the story of when the white men's calvary surrounded the Lakota people and they left a huge fire ring. Blocking the people in, one of the brave warriors jumped through the fire and made it, therefore, the people followed him by jumping through the fire and this is where we got our name as a nation, the Burnt Thighs. I created my own design as an inspiration from my great-great-grandfather's vision, by keeping the two-blue circles vertically and expanding the two red arrows opposite from each other. This design came to me in a dream, but it was blurred until the next day, as I was beading another project, the design hit me, and I immediately sketched out what I saw.
