White sage, Artemisia ludoviciana, is the plant commonly known as
sage. Artemisia comes in 10 different varieties in South Dakota with
different uses for each variety. Sage is used as a smudging tool as
well as other ceremonial ways. The smoke is used to repel negative
energies and to purify spaces/people/items.
To use: Some people prefer to light a whole sage bundle to
smudge and stamp it out on nonflammable surfaces when
done. Other people prefer to take a few leaves at a time,
roll them into balls, and then ignite to smudge with.
Depending on the variety it can also be eaten, used in a
tea or poultice.
