St. Kateri Tekakwitha was the first Native American to be recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church. Born in 1656, her Algonquin mother was captured by the Mohawks, where she met her husband.

St. Kateri converted to Catholicism at age 19, where she spent the next five years practicing religion until her death at age 24.

Her name, Kateri, is the Mohawk form of Catherine, which she took from St. Catherine of Siena.
