Every year during the Spring Equinox the Lakota perform a special ceremony to welcome back the Wankiyan Oyate. This is a time of renewal and awakening of the spirit. Wankiyan is a very sacred spirit the protector of truth for mankind. He can give life and take it away.
The legendary Lakota warrior Crazy Horse carried the wankiyan spirit with him. It is where is said to have drawn his strength.
