Sweet Flag
Siŋkpȟétȟawote
Sweet Flag (Lakota name translates to “muskrat food”) or
Acorus calamus, is used to treat arm or leg cramps,
indigestion, sore throats, and toothaches. Parts of the plant
can be eaten raw or cooked and candied.
To use: Cut a small portion of root and chew to produce a
numbing effect on the throat and teeth. The root can also
be grated into boiling water and made into a tea for
indigestion. A poultice can also be made and rubbed on
cramps in the extremities.
