Statement from the artist:
“The creation of the design is based on Lakota Beadwork Iconography. Creating the design with simplicity in mind to honor the way it was done when my great great great great grandparents did. The design tells a story itself – in that one meaning of the starquilt is that it represents community. You’ll see at the peak of every direction is a triangle that is the symbol for home. This calls upon the knowing that there are all people involved in creation. In between the houses are the symbols for the thunders and lighting signifies the things that strengthen us through adversity. What we as humans bond over just as much as love. Each house has a feather underneath to carry it upwards. The three tiered triangle above the home is the symbol for earth. A nod towards that we aren’t above the earth but of the earth. Leading upward to the cloud symbol. Above the clouds is the symbol for the tuswecha(dragonfly) protector of children as were all children. Tuswecha is sacred.
Wrapping around the edges of the circle are the symbols of stars. The symbol is about community.” -Derek “Focus” Smith
