Buffalo- Tatanka

Represents: Self-sacrifice, Fortitude, and Bravery

The buffalo is very highly regarded by the Lakota. He provides Everything for daily life, food, shelter, clothing, and tools among others. He is our relative, like a big brother, very generous he gives of himself to provide for others. The buffalo is at the center of the Lakota culture.

About 50 million buffalo once provided for the Lakota on the plains. They were hunted down to one small herd in only about 30 years. The Lakota spiritual leader Black Elk prophesized, the strength of the Lakota would return with the return of the buffalo herds.
